PRESS RELEASE
COVID-19 CASES ARE REDUCING, DEATH RATE IS STILL HIGH

As of April 5 2022, the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be easing based on the trend of daily Covid19 cases for 30 days after the peak period of the wave on February 14 – February 28 2022. Since the third wave increased in January 2022, Covid-19 cases have increased by 1.76 million until April 5 2022 and the highest number of national daily new cases occurred on February 16 2022 with a total of 64,718 cases.

Compared to the second wave, thousands of positive deaths have increased during the third wave. There were at least 11,410 people who died positive for Covid-19 during the third wave and the highest number of deaths occurred on March 8 2022, amounting to 401 people.
The high death rate and increase in positive cases should be a reflection for all of us. Behind the atmosphere of the third wave which is not as tense as the second wave, a hidden danger is quietly hitting Indonesia. So will this reality be announced and just suppressed? The public may be bored with the atmosphere and issues of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it is appropriate for the government to continue to pay great attention to protecting the Indonesian people from this threat.
To date, the total number of positive COVID-19 deaths has reached at least 165,766 people based on COVID-19 data per province, while the number of deaths published by the central government only states 155,421 people as of April 5 2022. The difference in the COVID-19 death rate is calculated at 10,345 people. However, this number does not include deaths probable Covid-19 has reached at least 28 thousand people and 3,017 self-isolated deaths as of March 2022.
Therefore, this moment when the pandemic has subsided should be an opportunity to improve the data which until now still shows differences, especially in the Covid-19 death rate. With the number of deaths still high in a situation where cases have subsided, it is actually unwise to announce a transition period to endemic. Because, existing data still shows that the transmission of Covid-19 in Indonesia still causes severity and death which endangers society.
As of April 6 2022, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia was recorded at 82,146 people. This large figure also serves as a reminder that the government must tighten health protocols again, especially ahead of Eid. The green light for homecoming and leave activities during Eid al-Fitr should be given with stricter health protocol prerequisites, to avoid a spike in preventable cases and deaths due to Covid-19 (preventable deaths).
