Residents Died Before Getting to the Hospital and ICU
Jakarta, 26 June 2021 – Based on the results of hospital searches conducted by LaporCovid-19 over the past week, many hospitals refused patients because there were no available beds. Patients who cannot get a mattress in the Emergency Room (IGD) have to survive at home with the available equipment available from the Community Health Center, and even end up dying because they don't get help as soon as possible.
Over the past week (14-25 June 2021), LaporCovid-19 received at least 43 citizen reports for hospital requests. As a result, almost all hospitals we contacted showed that the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), isolation and emergency rooms were fully occupied. Three patients even died because they did not get an ICU room.
One of the emergency patients was a 59 year old man who was in a hospital in Depok and needed an ICU with a ventilator. On Saturday night (19/6) until early Sunday morning we contacted 95 SPGDT (Integrated Emergency Management System) located in Jabodetabek, until Sunday (20/6) before early morning. However, of the 95 hospitals, 36 reported that their ICU rooms were full, including Mitra Keluarga Depok Hospital, Sulianti Saroso Hospital, Pasar Minggu Regional Hospital and Persahabatan Hospital. Meanwhile, eight hospitals said they did not have ICU rooms and 51 hospitals did not respond at all. Until finally this morning at around 05.00 WIB the patient died because he did not receive adequate health services.
Of the 43 reports, 15 of them experienced medical emergencies, so they needed help as soon as possible. The patient's condition is generally low oxygen saturation, high fever, accompanied by nausea. The remainder experienced mild to moderate symptoms that required monitoring at the local health center. However, unfortunately, several Community Health Centers were also a bit slow to respond to assistance.
To find a hospital, apart from contacting the SPGDT Hospital directly, we also contacted the Health Service. Apart from that, several times we also referred to the availability of rooms on the Ministry of Health's SIRANAP site. However, there are often differences in the data in which it is written to be available
SIRANAP, but in reality it is not available. In conditions where many people need hospitals or ICUs, it is important for stakeholders to provide guidance on accurate hospital and ICU availability data, so that patient care and rescue efforts are realized effectively and efficiently.
