Surabaya Residents Are Not Ready to Face the Relaxation of Social Restrictions

Jakarta, 15 July 2020 The city of Surabaya is one of the epicenters of the spread of the corona virus after DKI Jakarta. After the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) in Surabaya were not extended, residents' activities began to be relaxed. At the same time, the number of cases of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) infection is increasing. Responding to this situation, LaporCovid-19 together with the Social Resilience Lab, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) conducted a survey of Covid-19 risk perceptions among residents of the city of Surabaya. The aim of this survey is to determine the level of understanding, knowledge and behavior of the community regarding the risk of Covid-19.

This study was conducted from 19 June to 10 July 2020 and succeeded in getting 5,904 respondents spread throughout the city of Surabaya. After the validity test was carried out, there were a total of 2,895 valid respondents.

Methods and Results

We used the Quota Sampling Method based on population variables per sub-district in the city of Surabaya. The online survey was conducted via the Qualtrics platform which was distributed via the instant messaging application (WhatsApp) with the help of the Surabaya City Government Public Relations team and the community community network.

This risk perception study uses three analytical methods, namely descriptive statistics to obtain a demographic picture of respondents as well as basic information related to study variables; Spearman rho analysis to measure correlation between variables and demographic factors; and the risk perception index measurement formulation (Risk Perception Index) which is used to measure the general trend of respondents' risk perceptions regarding the pandemic situation by including 6 variables, namely Risk Perception, Self-Protection, Information, Knowledge, Social Capital, and Economy.

As many as 40.2% of respondents were women. In terms of education, the majority of respondents were Bachelor's graduates (47.1 percent) and high school graduates (36.1 percent). Most respondents were private employees (36.6 percent), followed by housewives (15.8 percent) and civil servants/ASN (15.5%). In terms of health risks of Covid-19 infection, as many as 21% of respondents have a history of/are currently suffering from comorbid diseases.

Findings

Overall, the Risk Perception Index (RPI) score for Surabaya residents is 3.42, meaning that, descriptively, this score means that Surabaya residents generally have a high level of risk perception. tends to be rather low. If translated into policy language, this score shows that the easing of social restrictions cannot yet be fully implemented in Surabaya due to the low level of risk perception among residents.
